During I Love To Read we teacher librarians are always looking for something new! Here are a few ideas that I came up with along with my fellow TL's Sherry Gibson and Heather Eby.
I always have a hard time seperating Reading from Writing, so my week is always called 'I Love To Read and Write!' This year our theme is around FOOD! Bon Appetite!
Write the Walls -- Attach a dry erase marker with a string. This activity should be supervised. Graffiti is a teachable moment. I remind the kids not to repeat words and be considerate of space! Don't write too big! Kids love walking the halls . It is fun to go around and read them too!
Scattergories - each teacher will receive a chart paper with 'FOOD' written on it. In the morning a letter will be announced. Example 'C' the classes have 15 min. to come up with as many 'food' words as they can that begin with the letter 'c'. ie. cookies, cake, cream cheese (for 2 pts.!) Afterwards we tape them up in the front hallway for everyone to READ!! It is fun to see all of the different ideas ~ We rolled the letter 'P'.
Bulletin Board Ideas - pictures to follow!
- Recipe for a Good Story - like a recipe for a good friendship
-Something with restaurant/food company logo - (maybe sentences/book titles ...Oh Henry Does It Again!
-5 Senses book reporting (looks...tastes....etc.)
-Where's the Food! - challenge kids to find references to food(s) in the books they're reading
- Mmmmm Good Books!
- Advertising Jingles for Books
Here the students used hearts in all of their book recommendations! Thanks to Cari for this idea. She originally used the gingerbreadman for her winter idea. We used hearts for I Love to Read.
Here the students were inspired by the book 'Alligator Pie'. They wrote food poems that are sung to familiar songs.
Food Themed Magic Squares -I will post these when I have finished them! Here is a couple ~
Reciprical story - a CopyCat idea from the book - If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
Inside the pizza box we placed many Numeroff books to do some 'frontloading' with the students. Once they had the idea we gave them their own blank sheet. On the top was the caption "If You Give A Principal Pizza". At the end of I Love To Read, we will read our story at the assembly!
