**Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling** Educators at all levels can use Digital Storytelling in many ways, from introducing new material to helping students learn to conduct research, synthesize large amounts of content and gain expertise in the use of digital communication and authoring tools. It also can help students organize these ideas as they learn to create stories for an audience, and present their ideas and knowledge in an individual and meaningful way.
Fieldtrip- Take pictures during a fieldtrip, import them into Photostory, have the children sequence them, write a storyboard to go with the show, have the children narrate. Once the show is finished, you can run it during Open House or for guests. Burn these to CDs at the end of the year for a collection of what was learned during the year.
Open House Idea-- Let students take pictures of people and places around the school. Import the pictures and let students narrate (from their written script), add some music and viola! you have an introduction to your school, ready to burn to a CD and hand out to a new member of the class.
Book Review-- Use this format for student's to create book reviews for the library. Great idea for I Love To Read/Write
Phonics -- Sounds and alphabet letters. As a teacher you can create the show by adding the images, then let your students finish the show by narrating the sounds. This can even be a form of assessment.
Idioms – always a fun EAL assignment! I have a large picture that is full of idioms. I use this as an activating activity! Use it as an assessment-- create PowerPoint slides with the alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, etc. Have the kids put them in order and then record.
Create a Historical timeline-- Photostory would help students create a historical timeline that could be used in History or English classes. A Look at Our Year-- Photostory would be great to show what our year looked like. Take pictures throughout the year and make a yearbook.
Family Interviews-- Have students interview a grandparent or other relative, then use pictures taken during the interview, or family photographs, to create a pictorial version of the interview. Great for Grandparents Day!
School Rules- At the beginning of the year take pictures of the students following class and school rules and use it to go over and review rules throughout the year.
Fun Day Memories- Take pictures at school fun day and use photostory 3 to show them to the kids.
Getting to Know You Autobiography: Administrators, teachers, other school personnel could use Photostory 3 to introduce themselves to students. Students could also construct an autobiography as an icebreaker.
Describing my friends: For the foreign language class, you may have your students take pictures of some of their friends or classmates and create a photostory using adjectives in the foreign language to describe the physical characteristics and personality of them.
Family Tree: Have students look at their family tree by names and date, and then create a presentation about their family. Photo Story 3 would allow them to do this and make it something they can definitely keep for future generations…
